Eastern Sierra Fall Foliage Workshops – 2009
The eastern slope of the Sierra is home for fall foliage in California. It is the only area in California with a concentrated abundance of fall foliage that literally covers the canyon walls with color. And, in some places, the color extends for miles.
The variety of microclimates and other non-foliage subjects makes the area ideal for an extended shooting season lasting six weeks or more in some years.
Your workshop leader is Dave Henry. One visitor’s bureau official once said he was the father of fall foliage tourism in the Owens Valley. This is probably because he has been covering the foliage continuously as a photographer for The Sacramento Bee since 1979. In 1982, The Bee began running his foliage coverage and it was so popular they have been running it ever since. He taught his first photography workshop in Bishop in 1982.
The publicity and notoriety for fall foliage in the Eastern Sierra took a huge leap when The Bee began carrying his stories and photos on their web site (www.sacbee.com/leaves/) in 2001. The Internet is the perfect medium for carrying his daily color updates and key places to get the best color. Photographers from all over the United States and Canada email him for his “best bet” advice for their western foliage trek.
Every year readership continues to grow and now the area has achieved national notoriety. This year’s coverage will be just as popular with the addition of streaming video (with the new Canon 5DMkII) on The Bee’s web site and periodic color reports on Sacramento’s Fox affiliate KTXL Fox40 television station.
Prior to joining The Bee in 1979, Dave taught seminars and workshops for 9 years while working for Minolta, Leica and Canon. In the last 40 years he has taught hundreds of seminars and workshops to thousands of photographers all over the world and covered assignments on five continents.
